What is Leucoderma?
Leucoderma which is also referred to as Vitiligo is a skin disorder characterized by the loss of pigment leading to the extreme whiteness of the skin. The pigment involved here is melanin. The higher the amount of melanin, the darker the skin becomes. When the levels of this pigment become low, it causes white patches on the skin which can appear gradually.
Leucoderma is not a contagious or infectious disease. It does not pose any threat to any other organs of the body and is not harmful or life-threating in any way. The only problem with this disorder is the appearance which can mentally or psychologically affect the health of the person as he or she would develop certain insecurity or shyness to be social
White patches of skin are gradually observed to be occurring throughout the body including insides of the mouth, retina, nose, hands, armpits, legs, and feet. It can occur elsewhere on the body as well.
Leucoderma or Vitiligo is an auto-immune disease in which the immune system falsely considers the pigment melanin as a foreign agent such as bacteria or virus and destroys it reducing its level. The exact cause for this action is not found though there may be certain triggers involved. These include abnormal hormonal levels, hereditary causes, and environmental factors.
